So much depends upon clear, clean water and fresh, clean air – resources that can no longer be taken for granted; resources that define our quality of life.  Clean water and fresh air are abundant at this 12-acre property bordered by 1,800 feet of the White River in NW Wisconsin’s Bayfield County.

The White River is one of Wisconsin’s least developed rivers.  Its pristine waters are jointly protected by the WI DNR, Trout Unlimited, Friends of The White River and the Bayfield Conservancy.   With over 40 miles of Class I and Class II trout water, this scenic river is known as a premier brown trout fishery.  The river begins at the confluence of 3 small streams in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, near the Village of Delta, not far from this special property.  The water here is cold and is infused with springs.   Indeed, springs from this acreage feed into the White River.  While the stream is known for its native brown trout population, the colder water temperatures near the headwaters support native brook trout, as well.

The land here is rich with old-growth, twisting cedars.  On my first walk around this property a pair of wood cock corkscrewed up from the river bank – a shy bird not often seen and a prized addition to a birder’s list.  Bubbling springs peep out from the hill sides, disappear back underground and then merge with the flowing river.  Giant spruce and the startling white bark of birch trees provide beautiful contrasts in the surrounding forest.

This is the exceptional setting for this well-designed, comfortable and lovingly maintained 2 bedroom/2.5 bath White River home with its 2 bedroom /2 bath guest cabin and 3-car, drive-through garage.  Lots of space!  Lots of character!

The half-log sided, single story main home with 1,400 sq. ft. of living space (plus full, unfinished basement) includes a master bedroom suite with a private bath, wood-burning fireplace and walk-in closet.  There are pine and cedar paneled walls and ceilings throughout the main home and a gas-log fireplace in the living room.  The living room, dining area and kitchen are combined and honor the river scenery with wonderful views.

I really enjoy cooking, and the kitchen here is SWEET.  The 10 ft. prep island has a gas cook top, and there is a built-in electric oven plus a dishwasher, trash compactor and double door refrigerator.  The California kitchen design is bright with white, tile counters and light, clean-lined birch cabinets.

The 2 story guest cabin is like another home in itself!  It has a full 1 bedroom/ 1 bath apartment on the upper level.  The main floor includes an office area with a small kitchen, bath and a spacious, unfinished storage room.  The main level could also be additional guest sleeping space.

And there are more property surprises:

  • The well water is artesian.
  •  The home and guest cabin have central air.
  • If you want to stay in touch with the outside world, the home has fiber optic, high-speed internet access.
  • The guest cabin has an exterior elevator to the 2nd floor.
  • Land bordering the property to the north is in conservancy, and the land to the south, across the White River from this property, is owned by the WI DNR.

You don’t have to be a trout angler to appreciate this gorgeous little place.  If you do trout fish – this is primo – a reverent retreat as close to wilderness as we can be in northern Wisconsin.  The river is a scenic backdrop for canoeing, kayaking and bird watching.  Biking, hiking and hunting are activities you can enjoy here, too.  For the snowmobiler, the winter in this area is as good as it gets. There is snowmobile trail access from Pike River Rd.  My own preference runs to cross country skiing and snow shoeing, but I’ll admit that running a sled through deep, fresh snow in this forest is a truly memorable experience.
